Grace Notes

I have been pondering grace a lot, lately. It’s another big word!  The dictionary definition of grace, in a human sense, is simple elegance and refined movement.  I looked up God’s grace, and it is defined as “unmerited favor,” a gift of His goodness that we do not deserve and could not earn if we tried!

I knew this post was going to have more music than scripture, but I wanted scriptural backing.  2 Corinthians 12:9 states that God’s grace is sufficient for us and is made perfect in our weakness.  The Bible also says that grace can be found in wilderness places (Jeremiah 31:2-3).  It justifies all of us who believe, freely, through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus (Romans 3:23-24).  It is granted to each of us, as apportioned by Christ (Ephesians 4:7).  It saves us, through faith, not of ourselves that we could boast, but as a gift of God (Ephesians 2:8).

I am a musician by trade and by nature, and as I pondered grace, I thought of grace notes.  Grace notes are extra, quick fluttery notes added to main notes in a piece of music.  These notes are, as the first definition says, simply elegant and refined.  They give the piece of music extra flair and finesse; enhancing what’s already there.  It makes the feel of the piece complete.  I knew I was supposed to title this post “Grace Notes.”  We could survive without grace, but we would be separated from God, lost, scared, anxious, and incomplete.  However,  His grace saves us, justifies us, and follows us wherever we go, completing us in communion with Jesus, kind of like “grace notes” complete a piece of music.

Now, my husband calls me “a music nerd,” and one of my mom’s famous quotes is “There’s a song for every occasion.”  So, I started searching out pertinent songs.  I had never before actually pondered what grace is, what it encompasses, what it does, where it’s found, the many forms it takes, the many places it shows up, and the many ways it shapes my life every day as a believer.  God’s grace is like giant bubble wrap in this crazy world we live in, keeping me wrapped in His love, peace, and protection, though I’m struck from every side by various forces, thoughts, and situations!

Music touches places nothing else can, and explains things in profoundly simple yet deeply touching ways!  There are so many songs about God’s grace, and it seems that each one portrays grace in a slightly different way.

The first and most important manifestation of grace, of course, is salvation!  One of the first songs I thought of as I pondered this early this morning, was Flawless by MercyMe…

Well let me introduce you to amazing grace
No matter the bumps
No matter the bruises
No matter the scars
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
No matter the hurt
Or how deep the wound is
No matter the pain
Still the truth is
The cross has made
The cross has made you flawless
So, grace is there, no matter what…in our trials and tribulations, our pain and woundings…the grace of God, shown through the gift of salvation, makes us flawless!
Another great “grace” song is This is Amazing Grace!   The chorus says SO much!
This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love
That You would take my place
That You would bear my cross
You laid down Your life
That I would be set free
Oh, Jesus, I sing for
All that You’ve done for me
We separated ourselves from God, through sin, and He gave His only son to pay the price to buy us back!
One can’t do a post on God’s grace without the obvious.  I was thinking through Amazing Grace, today, and the 2nd verse struck me with more umph than I’ve ever noticed before.  As I’ve dug deeply into grace scriptures and songs, God has revealed me so much depth to a little word!
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
God’s grace is there, at every turn.  It teaches our heart to look for Him, long for Him, fear Him…and releases us (if we allow Him to) from fears of earthly things!  Wow!
Finally, I’m realizing that God’s grace truly IS all we need!  It’s with us in every moment on this earth and into eternity.  It paid the price for all our sins.  It’s in every glorious moment, every hardship, and every monotonous detail of our lives.  It finds us on mountaintops and in the deepest, darkest valleys; in triumphs and defeats; profound sadness and glorious joy!  There is no moment, no sin, no failure, no circumstance that grace cannot permeate!
When we adopted our daughter from China a couple of years ago, we made a video with the song My Story by Big Daddy Weave.  Here is the chorus…Nibble on these truths!
oh the kindness of Jesus, that draws me in
o to tell you my story, is to tell of
the grace that is Greater than all my sin
of when justice was served, and when mercy wins!
of the kindness of Jesus, that draws me in
o to tell you my story, is to tell of Him
o to tell you my story, is to tell of Him
This is my story, this is my song
praising my savior
all the day long.
And last but not least…I think this is my favorite “grace” song!  Maybe not necessarily my favorite, but SO full of truth and peace!
It’s there in the newborn cry
It’s there in the light of every sunrise
It’s there in the shadows of this light
Your great grace
It’s there on the mountaintop
It’s there in the everyday and the mundane
There in the sorrow and the dancing
Your great grace
Oh, such grace
From the creation to the cross
Then from the cross into eternity
Your grace finds me
Yes, Your grace finds me
It’s there on a wedding day
There in the weeping by the graveside
There in the very breath we breathe
Your great grace
Same for the rich and poor
Same for the saint and for the sinner
Enough for this whole wide world
Your great grace
Oh, such grace
From the creation to the cross
Then from the cross into eternity
Your grace finds me
Yes, Your grace finds me
There in the darkest night of the soul
There in the sweetest songs of victory
Your grace finds me
