Our Hearts

As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart (Psalm 27:19).

You know how, sometimes, a verse of scripture will jump off of the page and fill in a piece of your aching heart…that you might not even know you had?  We can read a verse a hundred times, and one day, the Holy Spirit breathes life into that verse and drops it right into a hole in our heart!  Then, in some cases, I will read a verse (like today’s key verse) and think…”Wow!  I’m pretty sure I’ve never noticed this verse, before!”  I had a key verse chosen for today’s meditation…and then God showed up with this beauty.  It breathes life and renewal.

This is the final installment in the series about praying over our parts.  We started with our mind because that’s usually where our troubles begin.  Today, we are ending with the heart, because it’s all a big circle.  If our heart is controlled by the Holy Spirit, we will have better control of our other parts, as well!  Galatians 5 tells us that being led by the Spirit will produce good fruit in our lives.  Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control are all conditions of a heart led by God’s Spirit.

There are many verses about the heart, and how our hearts should be.  First, We are to trust Him with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding and to trust Him in all our ways (Proverbs 3:5-6).  In addition, Luke 6:45 tells us that a good man’s heart will pour good from his mouth, but the evil man’s heart will pour evil from his mouth, for “out of the abundance of the heart, a man speaks.” This explains why we are to guard our hearts above all else!

Time and time again, God is showing up–and BLOWING up–what I thought I knew about His Word!  Based on scripture verses, here are some specific things we should be praying over our hearts…and the hearts of our loved ones.

Lord, please help our hearts to be…

  • moldable
  • teachable
  • turned toward You
  • surrendered to you
  • compassionate toward others
  • pure
  • guarded by your peace
  • not troubled
  • thankful
  • soft and pliable; not hardened toward you
  • cheerful
  • wise
  • obedient
  • free from fear, doubt, anxiety, panic, and dread
  • constantly praising your name and your deeds
  • fully seeking you, at all times

And what more perfectly summarizing passage could end our study of how to pray over our parts than this one?  In fact, you can pray this passage directly to the Throne of Grace by personalizing it and changing “your” to “my” and “you” to “me” or “I”!

Proverbs 4:23-27

23 Above all else, guard your heart,
    for everything you do flows from it.
24 Keep your mouth free of perversity;
    keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead;
    fix your gaze directly before you.
26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
    and be steadfast in all your ways.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left;
    keep your foot from evil.
