I is for…Inherit

(You will) obtain a rich inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.  1 Peter 1:4

Inherit:  (verb) 1.  To receive something, as an heir, following the death of someone.                2.  To receive or be left with a situation, property, money, or object from a previous owner.

What does God say about inheritance?

  • We inherited a sinful nature and certain death from Adam and Eve (Genesis 1), but God…
  • He, the Lord, is our inheritance and our cup  (Psalm 16:5)
  • He qualifies us to share in the inheritance of the saints.  We shall receive rescue, redemption, and forgiveness  (Colossians 1:12-13)
  • We are heirs of God and with Christ, if we suffer with Christ, for we will also be glorified with Christ  (Romans 8:7)
  • The poor in spirit will inherit the kingdom of God, and the gentle will inherit the earth (Matthew 5:3, 5)
  • Thieves, the covetous, drunkards, revilers, and swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:10)

Our heavenly, godly inheritance (all facets of it) is a gift from God.  Just like any gift, we must open our hands to receive it.  An inheritance passes from one owner to another.  God has chosen us, His children, to receive all of His good and perfect gifts because we are his heirs, as His children!

Finally, the ultimate inheritance, when Christ comes back to claim His children, is explained in Revelation 21!  It’s a perfect explanation of what we can expect to receive as children of God!   He will literally, physically dwell among us!  He will wipe every tear from our eyes, because there will be no more death, mourning, or pain!  All things will be new.  We will receive living water, without cost.  He is our God…and we are His children!

Jesus, thank you for being the ultimate giving, loving father!  Thank you for allowing us to inherit gifts we could never earn, deserve, or re-pay!  Thank you for saving and rescuing each of us who gives our lives to you, as you gave your life for us!  Help us understand and receive all that you long to give us.  In Jesus’ name, Amen!
