“She’s missin’ a little.”
“It doesn’t work like it used to.”
“Something just isn’t quite right.”
Sound familiar? We’ve all said these things about a car, an appliance, or even a relationship at some point or another. Sometimes, our car needs a tune-up. Our appliances need to be cleaned or repaired. Our relationships need a little TLC.
The word RECALIBRATE has been rattling around in my spirit, lately. Today, I researched the definition and was blown away! The first definition I found was for the word calibrate which means to determine the caliber of something.
Caliber refers to the quality of something; its degree of excellence or importance. Therefore, if I recalibrate something, I adjust and improve it. Thesaurus.com gives these synonyms: modify, reshape, revise, and shift. Dictionary.cambridge.org says it means “to change the way you do or think about something.”
Lately, I’ve been writing much about spinning. We all have areas of our lives that spin us out of control: external things like relationships, finances, and large decisions and internal struggles such as anxiety, fear, and people-pleasing. We tend to get stuck in these ruts and forsake forward movement. This started me thinking about life and its many facets. I examined some things we might need to recalibrate such as our habits, thoughts, emotions, words, and spiritual disciplines. Sometimes, small tweaks are all we need. In addition, sometimes simply noticing and naming the problem are big steps toward beginning the recalibrating process!
The cold, hard truth is that much of the change we need in our lives must begin between our own two ears! Zig Ziglar said it well. “You are what you are and where you are because of what has gone into your mind. You can change what you are and where you are by changing what goes into your mind.” Consequently, we can make big changes by adjusting where we park our minds. Our thoughts must be intentional. It’s time to recalibrate.
Romans 12:2 reminds us, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (NLT). To recalibrate our lives, we must focus on what we focus on, think about what we think about, and pay attention to what we pay attention to.
Jesus is the answer to all our questions and the solution to all our problems. Therefore, to recalibrate our lives, we must focus our attention on His Word. We must not forget these truths:
2 Peter 1:3 He has given us all we need to live a life of godliness.
Deuteronomy 31:6 He never leaves or abandons us.
John 14:6 He is the way, the truth, and the life.
John 15:5 We can do nothing without His help.
Philippians 4:13 We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
Romans 8:28 He works all things for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purposes.
John 10:10 Jesus came to give us abundant life.
Girded with these truths, we can recalibrate our lives
Deuteronomy 6:5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Psalm 34:14 Turn from evil and do good. Search for peace and work to maintain it.
Hebrews 12:1 Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
Philippians 4:8 And now dear brothers and sisters one final thing: fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right and pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
