The Beginning of Joy

Joy. Where is it? Why does it elude me? If it’s a gift, WHY don’t I have any? I’ve wondered about these things lately. Have you? I’ve oft heard pastors proclaim, “Christians should be the most joyful people on the planet!” And yet, so often we aren’t. Let’s investigate some truths about joy.

Who will display the joy of the Lord?

  • Those who refuse to stand with sinners or join with mockers (Psalm 1:1)
  • All who take refuge in God (Psalm 2:12)
  • Nations whose God is the Lord (Psalm 33:12)
  • Those who look to God for help (Psalm 34:5)
  • Those who are kind (Psalm 41:1)
  • Those who fear the Lord and delight in His commands (Psalm 112:1)
  • Loyal servants of the Lord (Psalm 132:9)
  • The righteous (Proverbs 29:6)

Because these words come straight from scripture, we know they are true. Therefore, to experience the joy of the Lord, we must live as members of the above groups. We must exhibit righteousness, worship and serve God, take refuge in Him, fear and obey God, be kind, and look to Him for help.

What kind of joy should we have?

  • Joy that clothes us (Psalm 30:11)
  • The joy of our salvation (Psalm 51:12)
  • Everlasting joy (Isaiah 61:7)
  • Wonderful joy (John 16:20)
  • Abundant joy (John 16:24)
  • Joy that fills us (Acts 13:52)
  • The joy of our faith (Philippians 1:25)

What should our joy cause us to do?

  • Sing and give thanks (Psalm 42:4)
  • Shout and sing (Psalm 65:13)
  • Rise up and sing (Isaiah 26:19)

God’s people should be joyful people, and joyful people sing to God as a normal, natural response to His goodness and faithfulness. According to Galatians 5:22, joy is a fruit of the spirit, the result of allowing God’s spirit to direct us.

Maybe you’re thinking, “Well, great. I’m supposed to have joy. But I still don’t feel joyful. Now what?” Never fear, hope is not lost. Joy is just within reach, no matter where you are or where you’ve been. God promises His joy to His children. Be on the lookout for more encouragement about joy!
